The Different Types of Evening Gowns

Ball Gown

Sheath Gown

Unlike ball gowns, a sheath gown is fitted tightly from top to bottom. It’s great for showing off a toned silhouette.

A-Line Gown

An A-line gown has a gentler transition from waist to skirt than a ball gown. It hugs the bodice but flares gently and gradually from the waist to the floor in the shape of a capital “A.”

Mermaid Gown

The mermaid gown hugs your curves from neck to knees, but has an added flare or ruffle from the knees to the floor. Mermaid gowns give a dramatic effect to a curvy figure.

Empire Style Gown

The Empire style accentuates the bosom, with a very high “waistline” right under the bust, and then flows gently to the floor. Cocktail Dress

A cocktail dress isn’t really a type of evening gown, but people often wear it to evening events. It is usually knee-length; for the daring with great legs, it can take the form of a mini. These dresses are for earlier and less formal cocktail hour events.
