The Different Types of Evening Gowns
Understanding the different types of evening gowns will help you select a gown that’s appropriate for your next event. Formal events and parties have made a huge comeback in recent years. The time to start shopping for your gowns is now, if you want to beat the rush and have plenty of time for fittings. Here are different styles to consider:
Ball Gown
This classic evening dress style features a fitted bodice with a tight waist and a large flared skirt. Ball gowns may or may not have a train. It takes time to get used to them, especially if there will be dancing, so select your shoes carefully and practice.
Sheath Gown
Unlike ball gowns, a sheath gown is fitted tightly from top to bottom. It’s great for showing off a toned silhouette.
A-Line Gown
An A-line gown has a gentler transition from waist to skirt than a ball gown. It hugs the bodice but flares gently and gradually from the waist to the floor in the shape of a capital “A.”
Mermaid Gown
The mermaid gown hugs your curves from neck to knees, but has an added flare or ruffle from the knees to the floor. Mermaid gowns give a dramatic effect to a curvy figure.
Empire Style Gown
If you’re a Jane Austen fan, you’ve seen this type of gown depicted in all the film adaptations of her novels. The Empire style accentuates the bosom, with a very high “waistline” right under the bust, and then flows gently to the floor. You can enhance the sleeves and neckline with lace or embroidery to call attention to the face. Empire style gowns make a comfortable and flattering choice for any figure.
Cocktail Dress
A cocktail dress isn’t really a type of evening gown, but people often wear it to evening events. It is usually knee-length; for the daring with great legs, it can take the form of a mini. These dresses are for earlier and less formal cocktail hour events.
