4 Ways To Coordinate Colors With Your Prom Date
Prom is the highlight of high school for many people. All the planning beforehand builds excitement, the night is full of magic, and the memories and photos last a lifetime. When you look back at those photos, you’ll admire what you and your date wore for that special night. The best way to ensure a timeless look for both you and your prom date is to coordinate colors. How can you coordinate without looking cheesy, though? We have four ways to help.
Matching Motifs
One fun way to coordinate your prom outfits is with matching motifs. Pick a theme or motif you both like, such as space or the desert, and build your outfits around that motif. For example, you might pick a galaxy-inspired dress, and your date might wear a suit jacket with constellations on it so you both match a space motif. Your colors may not match, but the coordination between the motifs will make you easy to spot across the dance floor and look stunning in pictures.
Complementary Colors
Another way to coordinate is with complementary colors. Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel, and the high contrast makes them look great together. Some examples of complementary colors are purple and yellow, red and green, and blue and orange. You and your date can choose the two colors you like most. One of you can then predominately wear one color while the other person wears its complementary color. Coordinate even further with accessories in the other person’s color.
Harmonious Hues
If you don’t want to contrast but you don’t want to perfectly match either, then consider choosing a hue family with your date. A hue family will include different shades of a chosen color, such as all the shades of green or all the shades of purple. You can then both wear different shades of the same color so your outfits are distinct but harmonious together. For example, you could wear a pastel purple while your date wears jewel-tone purple.
Alike Accessories
Maybe you and your date can’t agree on a single motif, color palette, or hue. Instead of trying to match these big parts of your outfits, match the small ones. Choose whatever outfit you want with matching or similar accessories to your date. For example, you might want to wear pink while your date wants to wear silver. Choose a third color that looks good with both choices, and wear accessories in that color. To follow this example, black looks good with pink and silver. Both of you could then wear black accessories so a small part of your outfits still matches.
Coordinating colors with your prom date, no matter which way you choose to do it, makes this special night even more memorable and photo-worthy.
